Functions
There are five major functions of the respiratory system
1. Providing a large surface area for the exchange of gases in the blood
2. Moving air through the body (from environment to lungs to be exchanged)
3. Protecting the system from pathogens, temperature changes, and dehydration
4. Producing vibrations for sounds, talking, and auditory communication
5. Aiding the sense of smell by using the olfactory nerves in the nose
